My Rules for Life

Things have been busy here so I’ve not posted for a while again, although you will both be aware that I have been doing other things to record my thoughts for you. The doctors have started me on some medical treatment which has meant that I’ve needed to go to the hospital far too many times over the past couple of weeks. Then, just as we thought I was getting somewhere I went and broke my foot. You have both been wonderful while I have been stranded on the sofa like a beached whale.

Last night you both made me a VIP seat out of blankets and put a sign on it. That made me so happy. You see, often the little things like that are more important than money or gifts. It makes me proud when you work together. It makes me sad when you argue but little things like this show me how much you love each other deep down.

Anyway, on to the point of this blog post. I’ve written some rules for my life. These are rules that I’ve always had at the back of my mind and alway try to live to, but it is only now, with all the time sitting waiting in hospital, that I have finally got around to writing them down in some sensible format.

Here they are (and they are in no particular order by the way):

  1. To embrace my mortality and to invest my time in legacy.
  2. To exceed expectations.
  3. To ensure that my life is about others, not about myself.
  4. To never leave people feeling like I haven’t got the time for them.
  5. To recognise beauty – even in the mundane.
  6. To seek out opportunities to develop wisdom.
  7. To have a thirst for knowledge.
  8. To prioritise the meaningful over the superficial.
  9. To face all challenges with courage.
  10. To love without the expectation of receiving anything in return.
  11. To exercise forgiveness.
  12. To always find the silver lining – no exceptions.

So, Matilda and Toby, what are your rules for life? They will probably be different to mine as you are different people. Some might be the same, but the important thing is that they are your rules and ones that you want to live by.

And thank you again, sometimes it is the small things that really make a difference.
