Experiences over possessions

Today is the last day of the year. It is the last day of the decade in fact. It is a time for self-reflection.

As I look back over the past year the things that have given me most pleasure are experiences. As a family, we have spent money on both possessions and experiences but when looking back it is the experiences that have made me the happiest.

My happiest times over the past twelve months have been when we are away on holiday together. This year we went on several holidays – sea glass hunting in Durham, a short holiday to Exmoor, touring around France for a fortnight and a week away in Wales.  The places were beautiful but it was the company that made it most special. My two best friends were with us for three of the holidays which made it even more wonderful for me – I am so lucky that we all get on so well. I don’t know how many more years you will want to come on holiday with us so I savour every moment.

Apart from enjoying experiences with family and friends, the other highlights of the year for me have been successes at work. I feel huge personal fulfilment from my job and I hope one day you find a career that does the same for you. Again, this happiness has nothing to do with possessions or money.

The point that I am trying to make is that we should invest our time and money in experiences with the people we love and in working towards success – not into material things. Although having nice possessions feels good at first, the happiness is superficial. If I had to choose between the people I love and the items that I own I would give up all of my possessions without a second thought.

What were your highlights from this year? I might be wrong but I bet none of them are to do with the items that you own.
